TWO police officers are under investigation and have been placed on administrative leave for allegedly assaulting a man with a mental disability or autism in Marpi on Dec. 19, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Variety learned that the complainant’s family expressed concern that DPS may be attempting to cover up the incident. The family said the two officers allegedly took the man to Marpi, beat him, released him, and left him to walk home. A formal complaint was filed on Dec. 22.

Asked about the incident, DPS said the case has been assigned to the department’s internal affairs office.

DPS Commissioner Anthony Macaranas on Monday said, “Both officers have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.”

“I will not tolerate any unprofessional behavior and take all incidents involving my officers’ conduct seriously,” Macaranas added.

No additional information about the two officers or the victim’s condition was available as of press time Monday.
