THE Maeda-Ericco joint venture has been chosen by the Saipan Solid Waste Task Force to ship out garment waste products and scrap materials for recycling.
Charles Jordan, the administration’s CIP coordinator, said the joint venture offered the lowest bid. He refused to reveal the amount of the winning bid and the two other companies that participated.
Jordan said the two losing bidders failed to follow the procedure set by the task force.
The task force wants the garment waste products shipped out of the commonwealth beginning May 1.
But Jordan said Maeda-Ericco will not start the shipment until it concludes ongoing negotiations with various shipping and garment companies.
A process also has to be determined on the shipment of these waste products, Jordan said.
The task force has identified old government warehouses that will temporarily house garment waste products.
Effective tomorrow, all garment waste products, which account for 30 percent of the daily waste at Puerto Rico, will be banned from the dumpsite.
This will help prolong the lifespan of the dump, the task force said. The new landfill in Marpi is scheduled to open in December.
