Man arrested for assaulting girlfriend

Judge Kenneth L. Govendo retained the $1,500 cash bail imposed on Reyes, 23, who is being held on charges of disturbing the peace, and assault and battery.

Govendo remanded Reyes to the custody of the Department of Corrections after the hearing.

Chief Prosecutor Michael Ernest represented the government while Assistant Public Defender Michael Brown was appointed as Reyes’ counsel.

Govendo also authorized the Public Defender’s Office to appoint someone who knows sign language to communicate with Reyes.

Detective Catherine B. Pangelinan said the the Department of Public Safety received a call at about 5:01 a.m. on Feb. 12 regarding an incident at a residence in Dandan  where Reyes was arrested.

Reyes and his girlfriend, the victim, were at a party in the area at about 4:15 a.m., police learned.

The victim’s friends prevented Reyes from pulling his girlfriend out of a car where she was sleeping at that time, police said.

In the process, Reyes pulled another lady out of the car, causing her to fall, which injured her left elbow.

Some of the persons who were at the party tried to hold Reyes down, but the defendant managed to get in the back seat of the car, police said.

Reyes then tried to choke his girlfriend using his left arm, police added.

“Mr. Reyes’ other hand reached to the right side of [the victim’s] mouth, hooked his finger inside of her mouth and began pulling it,” police said.

At about 3 a.m., on same day, the victim said Reyes hit her with his head and punched her in the face, police added.

Reyes’ brother punched the defendant to stop him from further harming the victim, police said.
