Man gets one day for marriage fraud

Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja dismissed with prejudice the remaining charge of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud filed by the Attorney General’s Office against Bashar.

Naraja placed Bashar on one year probation and required him to pay a  $2,000 fine within 10 months, a $100 court assessment fee  within 30 days, and a $100 probation fee within 60 days.

Naraja earlier vacated the ongoing bench trial of Bashar after both parties reached an agreement for a non-trial disposition.

Assistant Attorneys General Peter Prestley and Benjamin Petersburg prosecuted the case while Bashar was represented by attorney Edward C. Arriola.

Bashar’s co-accused, Jayna Lynn Taitano, 20, admitted the charge of marriage fraud and was sentenced to three years imprisonment, all suspended.

Taitano was placed on three-year probation for the remainder of her suspended sentence.

The prosecution said Bashar and Taitano entered into a fraudulent marriage on March 13, 2009.
