Man wanted for assaulting girlfriend lands in jail

Mario Muna Reyes is in jail for assault and battery and contempt of court.

According to the authorities, Reyes beat up his girlfriend when he got jealous of her brother who was visiting her on May 1.

Reyes was brought to  Superior Court for a bail hearing yesterday morning.

Associate Judge Juan T. Lizama set a $2,000 cash bail and remanded him to the custody of the Department of Corrections.

Preliminary hearing was set for May 28 while arraignment will be held on June 9.

The affidavit of Detective Andrea C. Ozawa that was submitted to court stated that Reyes was arrested for beating up his girlfriend between April 30 and May 1 at the defendant’s residence in As Lito.

According to the affidavit, the victim’s brother stopped by to visit the victim and to pick some local fruit.

When the brother left, the defendant got jealous and told the victim to get inside the house, but the victim refused and started to walk away from the house.

The defendant chased the victim and grabbed her left arm and dragged her into the bedroom.

The defendant then slapped the victim several times causing a black eye and bruises to her chin, the affidavit stated.

It added that after the assault, the defendant tried to hide the bruises by “making love marks below the victim’s chin.”

The victim was afraid to leave the house and managed to do so only on May 3 when the defendant left to sell scrap metal.

The victim reported her ordeal to her mother who immediately called police and reported the incident.

According to the affidavit, the defendant had a TRO last year involving the same victim. The protection order was dismissed later and the victim and the defendant reconciled sometime this year.

The affidavit stated that the defendant has a pending bail order modified on Sept. 28, 2007.

The bail order was in connection to a domestic violence involving the same victim and specifically ordered the defendant to stay away from the victim and any witnesses and to obey all commonwealth laws.

The affidavit said the 2007 domestic violence case is still pending so that the bail order is still active.
