THE Mariana Trench Monument Advisory Council, led by DLNR’s Floyd Masga (chairman), CRM’s Richard Salas (vice chair), DOD’s Mark Cruz (secretary), DCCA’s Frank Rabauliman, and USCG Maile Norman, has approved the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument Management Plan after a 15-year effort. This milestone marks a significant achievement in the conservation and management of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument.
The approval of the management plan is the culmination of countless hours of review, research, and consideration of public comments. The process involved collaboration with numerous individuals from state and federal partners, reflecting a shared commitment to protecting and preserving this unique marine ecosystem.
“We are pleased to announce the approval of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument Management Plan,” said Masga. “This plan represents a balanced approach to conserving the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the Mariana Trench, while also supporting sustainable uses of the monument.”
The next steps involve signing off on the plan and implementing the activities outlined within it. The council is committed to working closely with stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the management plan and the continued protection of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument for future generations.
About the MTMAC
The Mariana Trench Monument Advisory Council is responsible for advising on the management of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument. The council is composed of representatives from the Department of Lands and Natural Resources, Coastal Resources Management, the Department of Defense, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, and the United States Coast Guard. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service provide support to the advisory council as federal delegated officials.
