Marine Corps general to visit Saipan today

Sgt. Gregorio Comeo, the Marine Corps recruiter for the CNMI, the Philippines and Japan, said Brig. Gen. Daniel D. Yoo, commanding general of the Western Recruiting Region Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, will be on island with five other officials after visiting Guam.

Comeo said the visiting Marine officials will meet with Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores  in the afternoon.

In the morning, the Marines will have a lunch at El Marino Haven Restaurant, he said.

The group chose El Marino because, like the Tun Tavern, which was the birth place of the Marine Corps on Nov. 10 1775, the Saipan restaurant was dedicated to the Marines, Comeo said.

The general, he added, wants to know important information about the recruitment of students on island, he added.

Comeo said since he arrived two months ago, they have intensified their recruitment campaign in every high school.

He said school counselors and teachers have been very cooperative with them in the recruitment process.

Over 39 high school students have already been sworn in for the Marine Corps, he added.
