May 25 is Memorial Day

CNMI Military/Veterans Affairs Executive Director Ruth Coleman said a wreath will be laid at the Veterans Cemetery in Marpi to honor the fallen heroes on Monday morning. The program will start at 8:30 a.m.

“Let us all remember those who served the nation so that everyone may enjoy the fruits of freedom of a democratic society,” Coleman said.

She  is urging the people of the CNMI to remember the fallen veterans’ unselfish and dedicated service in defending the country.

 Rear Adm. William D. French, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Marianas, will be the keynote speaker during the Memorial Day celebration.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and French will lay the wreath while CNMI first lady Josie Fitial and French’s wife Monika will offer the memorial tribute.

The Pacific Winds Concert Band will provide the music.

Yesterday, acting Gov.  Eloy S. Inos signed a proclamation declaring May 19-25 as Memorial Week.

1Lt. Michael Murphy of the U.S. Army  read the proclamation.

“By honoring the proud soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coast guardsmen lost throughout the country’s history, the community is renewing its commitment to uphold the democratic ideals they fought and died to preserve,” the proclamation stated.

“During this year’s observance, we particularly recognize the courageous spirit of the men and women in our nation’s armed forced who are working without our coalition partners to restore civil order, provide critical humanitarian aid and renew Afghanistan and Iraq,” it added.
