SAIPAN Mayor Ramon “RB” Camacho, in his remarks on Friday, urged island residents to come together as a community during this holiday season.

Community members joined the mayor and his staff for the Christmas in the Park lighting ceremony at Sugar King Park.

The highlight of the event was the brightly lit train engine that was once used to haul sugar cane on Saipan during the Japanese era.

Visitors could also press a button to blow the train engine’s air horn.

In addition, the park grounds were lit up by different holiday photo backdrops and decorations.

The public can visit the Christmas in the Park displays every evening, at no charge, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Its last day of operation will be on Jan. 8.

Jaden Sanchez, the event’s emcee, said the Christmas in the Park event was aimed at “cultivating a space for our people to come together as one to celebrate happy moments.”

Mayor Camacho said it is his hope to strengthen the island’s community of diverse cultures.

“This train, tonight, we’re going to power up this engine and this power is from the spirit of ‘together’ to lift this spirit for this coming holiday season, a spirit of caring for one another,” he said. “If we maintain this spirit of together we can make things different here in our community.”
