(Office of the Saipan Mayor) — As it has been 237 years since its signing on September 17, 1787, it is a time to reflect on the importance and enduring significance of the United States Constitution — the cornerstone of our democracy and the rule of law. It is a guiding principle that remains as vital today as it was at the founding of our nation.
The Constitution embodies the values of freedom, equality, and justice, and its opening words — “We the People” — serve as a powerful reminder that the true source of authority lies in the hands of the citizens. Elected leaders and public servants are entrusted to act in the best interests of the people they represent, ensuring that the government remains accountable to its citizens and committed to serving the common good.
Mayor RB Camacho of Saipan echoed the sentiments of Governor Lou Leon Guerrero of Guam, agreeing that “Government exists to serve, not to rule.” Mayor Camacho emphasized, “The Constitution safeguards our freedoms and ensures that no government can overstep its bounds. It is a living document that reflects the will of the people, and it reminds us that the role of government is to protect and empower its citizens, not to exert control over them.”
It is important for the people of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to recognize their power as citizens and their role in shaping the future of our community. The Constitution ensures that no one branch of government has unchecked power. This system encourages active participation from the people to hold their leaders accountable and to work towards a government that truly serves the needs of its people.
“As one government, let’s work together for the people who have entrusted us with the responsibility to serve them,” said Mayor RB Camacho.
