Since Monday, the Saipan mayor’s office has been clearing the area of vegetation in preparation for the opening of classes at William Reyes Elementary School.
“There were instances when a car encountered another vehicle on a road and one had to yield and back up because there was not enough room to pass due to the overgrown vegetation,” Mayor Donald Flores said.
As of yesterday, he said they had already cleared vegetation on Isidoro Ave., Hilarion St., Guilermo Ave., Gregorio Ave., Texas Road, Chalan Kanoa Dr. and Francisco St.
Saipan Covenant Reps. Ralph Demapan and Raymond Palacios have been providing fuel for the equipment used in the cleanup operation, the mayor said.
Tony A., Reyes of Marianas Health Services and his employee also helped in the cleanup operation.
Today, in partnership with the mayor’s office, P&A Corporation will start collecting the debris.
Flores said they also coordinated with the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. in trimming trees near power lines.
They also received reports of water leaks on Francisco St. that residents in the area said has been going on for three months now, the mayor added.
Flores is urging community members to continue beautifying the island.
The mayor will continue the cleanup drive in other villages next week while the road repair projects in Chalan Galeide and Kanat Tabla will continue after the rainy season.
“We only focus on the sections that are not passable but we will return to fix the road again during the dry season,” Flores said.
He said they have also scheduled cutting down dead flame trees along the Beach Road.
The mayor’s office is coordinating with the acting director of the Division Agriculture, Manny Pangelinan, to ensure that “every time a tree is cut down we plant a new one,” Flores said.
