Mendiola: Tinian can’t afford 2 new casino commissioners

“There’s no money to pay for their salaries and the figure is not a small amount,” he said. “We need to pay them a minimum of $50,000 and a maximum of $75,000 each. Where are we going to get that money?”

The mayor has not yet named replacement for Bill Cing and Serafina King-Nabors whose terms as commissioners expired last year.

Mendiola said since they’re not anticipating an increase in revenue this fiscal year and the next, the island’s legislative delegation will oppose any new appointments to the commission.

The commission, he added, still has three members on board who can function “effectively and make sound decisions.”

According to Mendiola, Covenant-Tinian, despite the islands’ economic crisis,   he  remains optimistic that the island’s municipal employees will continue to get paid on time.

He said the legislative delegation will help ensure that there will be no “payless paydays” on Tinian.
