Military schedules several live fire exercises on FDM

THE military has scheduled several live fire exercises on Farallon de Medinilla this year, according to the commander of the U.S. Naval Forces in the Marianas.

Adm. Patrick W. Dunne said they have officially resumed training on Farallon de Medinilla after the U.S. Court of Appeals granted the Department of Defense’s motion to stay the 30-day preliminary injunction halting the military exercises.

“We have training scheduled throughout the year. We will resume training in accordance with the guidance we have been given,” Dunne said.

On Saturday, the Navy resumed its training activities on the island.

Gov. Juan N. Babauta, in a separate interview, said the CNMI is “elated” over the Court of Appeals ruling that stayed the 30-day preliminary injunction issued on April 30 by District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan.

The preliminary injunction was issued more than a year after the Center for Biological Diversity sued the Pentagon for allegedly killing and harming migratory birds on Farallon de Medinilla.

“We are just glad to see that the military can now resume its training,” the governor said.
