The Citizen and the Constitution” competition in Arlington, Virginia for the first round hearings on April 24-25.
The competition tests the students’ knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
Over 1,100 high school students from 103 schools in the 50 states and the District of Columbia are competing.
The top 10 finalists’ championship round will be held on April 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Event highlights
During the competition, the students will serve as expert witnesses testifying on constitutional issues in a simulated congressional hearing.
Each class is divided into six groups and students are scored on their opening presentation and on answers to follow-up questions by a panel of judges, who grade the students on understanding, constitutional application, reasoning, supporting evidence, responsiveness, and participation.
The national finals judges include state Supreme Court judges, public officials, political scientists, historians, educators, attorneys, journalists, and We the People alumni.
