‘Movies in the Park’ returns to Saipan

USO, a nonprofit organization that has been providing moral and recreational services to members of the U.S. military at 140 centers worldwide since 1941, will screen the 2010 animated comedy “Despicable Me” at the American Memorial Park amphitheater at 6 p.m. on Friday night.

“Movies in the Park,” which is ongoing on Guam at Agana’s Skinner Plaza, will be brought here in cooperation with the Tan Siu Lin Foundation, according to its manager, Ed Arriola Jr.

Arriola said Leigh Graham, USO Guam director, is very excited to come back to Saipan.

“It’ll be a great night of movies, popcorn, and cool breezes under the stars,” Graham said. “We would like to thank the Tan Siu Lin Foundation for reaching out to us and working to help launch this first movie in the park. This is a unique way of showing our servicemembers, veterans and their families how much we appreciate them. After all, it’s the families that give so much as well. We’re also bringing great giveaways for the children and promise a truly memorable experience for the entire community.”

Arriola said “Movies at the Park” is  another opportunity for the island community to come out and get together.

“We’re inviting the entire island to this event. It’s free, it’s a movie, it’s perfect for a date, for the kids, and for the entire family — this is for the people of the CNMI,” he said.

If the Saipan show is successful, USO might bring the event to Tinian and Rota.”
