(MVA) — Historic tourism site Kalabera Cave recently got a facelift from the Marianas Visitors Authority and LJ’s Lawncare Service.

The organizations teamed up to pressure wash the walkways and parking lot of the Marpi site, known for its significance as a burial cave for ancient indigenous Chamorros and for the skull-like appearance of its entrance.  “Kalabera” translates as “skull” in Chamorro and is derived from the Spanish word “calavera.”  Kalabera Cave is also one of the few sites in the Marianas where Chamorro pictographs have been found.

“Kalabera Cave is a historic site that has attracted more visitors in recent years with the renovations that have taken place. It was in need of cleaning, especially to address unsafe and unsightly buildup on the walkways during this rainy season,” said MVA Product Development Manager Raquel Aguon. “We would like to give special recognition to the efforts of the LJ’s Lawncare team, who not only cleaned the walkways, but also donated their personal time to pressure wash the entire parking lot.”

The cleanup team was led by Operations Manager Sam Camacho.

“LJ’s Lawncare is more than happy to give back to the community, most especially by enhancing and beautifying the tourist areas,” said Camacho. “Tourism is everybody’s business.”

Aguon noted that with the beautification efforts completed last month, MVA hopes that free-roaming cows in the area will be corralled soon to address the remaining problem of manure around the site.
