New law prevents House of Manhoben closure

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed House Bill 16-171, now Public Law 16-21, on Friday to appropriate money for Karidat.

Karidat’s federal funds from the Criminal Justice Planning Agency have already been consumed.

“If no funds are received by Karidat the House of Manhoben will have to be closed,” said House Minority Leader Oscar M. Babauta, Covenant-Saipan and sponsor of the bill.

Reps. David M. Apatang, R.-Saipan, Raymond D. Palacios, Covenant-Saipan, and Justo S. Quitugua, D-Saipan, cosponsored the measure.

P.L. 16-21 also allocates $25,000 for Northern Marianas College’s bookstore collateral improvements and renovation and $75,000 for another local project.

The governor separately signed House Bill 16-151, now Public Law 16-20, which appropriates $32,000 of local license fees collected from pachinko slot machines and poker machines on Tinian for its scholarship program.

Rep. Edwin P. Aldan, Covenant-Tinian, originally proposed to allocate $62,500 for Tinian municipal scholarship program but the money was reduced due to budget constraint.
