New law scraps term limit for election commissioners

Introduced by Sen. Joseph M. Mendiola, Covenant-Tinian, S.B. 16-34 is now Public Law 16-29.

The new law amends 1 CMC $ 6 103(a), which  prohibited commission members from serving more than two consecutive four-year terms.

Rota and Tinian lawmakers earlier complained that they were having a hard time replacing their islands’ commissioners who had already served two terms.

They said this might prevent the commission from convening due to a lack of quorum.

The commission must have nine members — five from Saipan and two each from Rota and Tinian.

There are currently eight commissioners and one more must be nominated to represent Rota.

The CNMI will hold its general elections in November.
