Toke Talagi, who was elected premier last week, said cutting expenditure and working out how to develop new streams of revenue will be a key focus for his administration.
He said gains could be made quickly from tourism.
“Given that we have got good air services from Air New Zealand I believe there is an opportunity that we can build up our accommodation stocks within the next three to six to nine months, so that we can utilize that,” he said. “I believe that tourism will be one of the answers that we should be looking at and that.”
