Funded by capital improvement funds provided through the U.S. Office of Insular Affairs, the water system connects 12 existing water wells at Rapogao, Sablan Quarry and Donni Spring to the newly constructed 400,000-gallon reservoir in Sadog Tasi to centralize the distribution, mixing and chlorination of water for customers in Garapan, Upper and Lower Navy Hill, Lower Base, Puerto Rico and Chinatown.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial cut the ceremonial ribbon and opened one of the valves marking the completion of the project on Monday.
The contract for the project, according to Press Secretary Angel A. Demapan, was awarded in July last year to AIC Marianas Inc.
Fitial, Commonwealth Utilities Corp. Executive Director Abe Malae, Pete Sasamoto of the water task force and OIA CIP coordinator Keith Aughenbaugh led the ceremony.
Fitial lauded the OIA’s CIP office, the water task force and AIC Marianas for their efforts to bring the much needed development to “fruition.”
“The culmination of this project further affirms the CNMI’s commitment to prudently using federal funds for the benefit of our island community. This is our commitment to accountable use of federal funds for important infrastructure projects,” Fitial said.
The governor looks ahead to secure additional funds to fulfill the commonwealth’s infrastructure needs.
“My administration will continue to support infrastructure development throughout our villages. We will continue working to secure more federal funds to meet the infrastructure needs of the various communities throughout our commonwealth,” he added.
