Public Health Secretary Joseph Kevin Villagomez said they are implementing the governor’s alternative energy program.
The department, he said, has announced a request for proposal for a wind turbine that will supply the new facility with up to 70 percent of power during day time.
Villagomez said funding must be approved by the federal government.
“We want everything here to be energy efficient,” he said, adding that the WIC clinic will also have back-up generator.
The new hemodialysis center is also energy-efficient, and the Commonwealth Health Center has also started using alternative energy sources, Villagomez said.
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial and Villagomez formally opened the new WIC clinic last week.
The clinic used to be government guest houses that were renovated.
WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children. It is a temporary assistance program for pregnant women, those who have recently given birth and children under the age of five.
With the new WIC clinic now separated from the hospital, Villagomez estimates it will serve up to 4,500 clients in fiscal year 2009.
