Newly installed generators prevent power shutdown at airport

“The two generators are now fully repaired and running…in fact it was able to provide power to a terminal building when [the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s] power recently went down,” he said.

With reliable power backup  in place, CPA can now move forward  with its schedules and operational planning, he added.

The two main generators have 1.8MG capacity each providing electricity to the entire terminal operation.

CPA contracted Seafix Inc. for the repair of the two main backup generators which went down last July when there were daily power outages  on island.

The repairs cost $200,000 and were funded by federal grants.

Camacho said the airport will have a more reliable power supply once the third federally funded generator arrives.

CPA signed an agreement with contractor GPPC Inc. for the third backup generator, which is expected to be delivered in  early 2010.

The federal government agreed to provide $2.1 million for this project, which was later expanded to include the airport tower control, the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting facility, and the emergency power grid.

The revised project cost is estimated to reach $6.8 million.
