NMC: Get a degree first before joining military

“We encourage students who want to advance professionally in the military to look at the benefits offered through the Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps program first,” said NMC interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera.

She said with SROTC, students get experience they can’t get anywhere else.

Studies show that high school graduates from low-income families are more likely to join the military  to support their family.

NMC said students who complete the SROTC program and obtain their bachelor’s degree will become commissioned as an officer.

NMC has tried various marketing campaigns and seminars to motivate students to earn a degree first before joining the military.

“Those who earn degrees prior to joining the military may also find that they can earn more in terms of salary amounts,” NMC said.

Students who join the SROTC program can advance through military ranks faster and will be able to take advantage of other benefits associated with the program, such as scholarship grants, free books and free allowances.

“A former NMC student, Joseph Sablan, was recently commissioned as an officer in the Army after having completed the SROTC program,” said Cabrera. “We hope his success encourages other students to strongly look at the SROTC option.”
