NMC leadership urged to be more transparent

He said the college leadership failed to discuss with the board what transpired in the meeting with the officials of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

“I can’t condone those things,” he said.

Before WASC’s Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges placed NMC on a continued show cause status, NMC interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera and NMC Chairwoman Paz C. Younis joined Galvin Deleon Guerrero, the college’s accreditation liaison officer and director of institutional effectiveness, in a meeting with WASC officials.

During the board’s special meeting on Thursday, Orsini said the board must be provided information regarding NMC’s accreditation.

“I want to be pro-active in this institution,” he said, adding that he doesn’t think asking for information will violate confidentiality.

Orsini said he has yet to see any report regarding the meeting between NMC and WASC officials.

Cabrera and Younis said NMC must  maintain an appropriate level of confidentiality regarding ACCJC at this juncture in the accreditation process.

The board at the same time agreed with the college management which said that there was no need to declare a “state of exigency” at NMC due to show-cause concerns that need to be immediately addressed before March 15 when the college submits its report to ACCJC.

A state of exigency will result in the suspension of existing policies and procedures to allow the NMC president to take all actions necessary to resolve urgent problems.

But the college leadership led by Cabrera said this is unnecessary as it will only  harm NMC’s efforts to reaffirm its accreditation.

During the meeting, the board also officially recognized the newly appointed regent, former Judge Juan T. Lizama.
