NMC prepares self-evaluation

In his report to the Board of Regents, NMC accreditation liaison officer Galvin Deleon Guerrero  said they are also done with the follow-up report to be submitted to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges on or before Oct. 15.

He declined to disclose  the content of the report saying commission policy requires confidentiality until such time it  takes action.

“It’s not that we hide things from media,” he said.

Deleon Guerrero said Bobbie Merfalen, NMC academic program services dean, has scheduled a professional development session for November.

Regent William S. Torres noted the importance of public participation, including  community members and the students, in the self-evaluation.

He said during their committee meeting,  they discussed the need to ensure proper documentation on how programs of the college have evolved.

Deleon Guerrero said the college will “absolutely” involve  stakeholders in conducting the institution’s program review process.

He said the process engaged the community through the NMC advisory council which is composed of community members and constituents of the college.

“We do have very thorough documentation of programs and we do include participation of the community,” he told the board.

A regular self-evaluation of the board will also lead to improvements, he added.

NMC President  Sharon Y. Hart said they are finalizing the projected calendar for board events, including meetings and topics to be discussed.

She said they are also coordinating time to ensure that stakeholders and other community members can participate in the meetings.
