Marianas High School senior-to-be Brittany Sablan, a student in the Educational Talent Search, or ETS, left Saipan for Honolulu on June 9. Upon learning of her acceptance to the program, Sablan, who plans to pursue careers in nursing, pediatrics, or technical software design, was both nervous and excited.
“This opportunity to participate in the Leeward Community College’s TRIO Upward Bound Summer Program will give me so much more personal and academic experience as a young adult getting ready to be a college student,” said Sablan.
At the summer residential, pre-college program, Sablan will be engaged in courses on not only math and science, but also on English, literature, composition, Japanese, Hawaiian, marine biology, and physics and college/career guidance, designed according to specific grade levels.
“We are very proud of Brittany, and we are also excited for her as she spends her summer enhancing her skills in math and science,” said ETS advisor Joan Dubrall.
Sablan has been with the ETS program for nearly a year. She is an active participant in many her high school’s clubs, such as the Video Productions Club, Outrigger Canoe Club, and the Prom Committee. She has also competed in and won awards from the National Forensics League and Math Court competitions.
In an earlier release disseminated by the college, a student from NMC’s Upward Bound program left Saipan to attend a similar summer program also at Leeward Community College in Honolulu.
The federally funded ETS program is tasked with assisting students complete high school and prepare for success in college.
