NMC’s 2 options for KRNM: Closure, new owner

Early this month, KRNM radio station manager Carl Pogue resigned to pursue higher education in the states.

According to Cepeda, although maintaining NMC accreditation is their main priority now, they want KRNM to remain on air.

“We will continue reviewing what’s the best option to take,” he said.

Cepeda acknowledged the “great service” that the public radio station provides to the community.

Early this year, NMC disclosed that it needed $70,000 to maintain the station’s existing format of NPR, BBC and Radio Australia programming.

“If feasible for NMC, we will keep the station open,” Cepeda said, adding that the board will inquire if the college was able to raise the target amount.

More than 10 years after it was established with federal funds, the radio station, continues to be heavily subsidized by the college.

NMC said because of the continuing decline in funding, it has to prioritize its academic programs and student learning support services over nonacademic programs.
