NMI Democratic Party officials will be in National Harbor, Maryland to participate in the Winter 2025 Democratic National Committee Meeting from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.
NMI Democratic Party Executive Director Nola Hix, Chair Jonathan Cabrera, Vice Chair Luella Marciano and National Committeeman Michael White will reconnect with colleagues from across the country, and attend the national party’s committee, caucus, and council meetings.
The local Democrats in a statement said they and their counterparts across the country and in the territories are seriously pondering the future of the party as they reflect on election losses at the national and local levels. The upcoming meeting will also highlight the future direction of the national party as DNC members elect the party’s officers.
Regarding the inauguration of Republican President Donald Trump, the NMI Democrats issued a statement stating that he “immediately began dismantling protections and policies instituted by the Biden-Harris administration.”
“Trump’s actions tell us exactly what to expect of his presidency and precisely whom his extremist agenda will target. Trump’s actions tell us that he is against diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Trump’s actions tell us that he will favor the richest in this nation at the expense of the middle and working classes,” the NMI Democrats said.
“Trump’s actions tell us he is in favor of the high cost of prescription medicine. Trump’s actions tell us that there is no room in his America for transgender and gender-nonconforming and queer people. And the list goes on. It is worth asking whether Governor Palacios, Delegate King-Hinds, and the NMI Republican Party are on board with Trump’s America. We are not. We will resist. We will hold Donald Trump, the national GOP and the NMI GOP accountable,” the local Democrats said.
In 2019, Hix, who was then the local party chair, spearheaded the establishment of the U.S. Territories Alliance, which aims to advocate for the needs of Democrats in the territories: American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
This year, the alliance has committed to vote as a bloc for the chair of the Democratic National Committee and will be publicly endorsing a candidate in the coming days.
DNC chair candidates include Quintessa Hathaway, Ken Martin, Martin O’Malley, Jason Paul, Faiz Shakir, Nate Snyder, Ben Wikler, and Marianne Williamson.
On Sunday, Feb. 2, Cabrera and Marciano will join other state and territory chairs and vice chairs at the Winter Meeting of the Association of State Democratic Committee. At this meeting, they will vote for the officers of the association and will follow up on discussions began in Scottsdale, Arizona, following the November 2024 election regarding “how to continue fighting for Americans everywhere.”
This past weekend, the U.S. Territories Alliance fully endorsed Jane Kleeb, Nebraska Democratic Party chair and candidate for ASDC president.
This historic bloc vote consists of the chairs and vice chairs from each of the five U.S. territories for a total of 10 votes, the NMI Democrats said.
“There is strength in numbers, and our collective power is now fully activated,” Marciano said. “I am looking forward to speaking to my stateside and territory colleagues, and learning what we can do as state party leaders to serve our people, to educate them about their rights as the current resident at 1600 Pennsylvania works very hard to dismantle those rights, and to encourage more people to get involved in the work of the Democratic Party at the local and national levels,” Marciano added.
