NMI, Guam municipal officials discuss tourism

Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores, who attended the recent Association of Mariana Islands Mayors, Vice Mayors and Elected Municipal Council Members, or AMIM, meeting on Rota, said they discussed the increase in Guam’s tourist arrivals and how the other islands can benefit from the territory’s booming economy.

AMIM adopted a resolution requesting the  Guam International Airport Authority to re-open the inter-island commuter terminal for travel within the Mariana islands, Flores said.

The municipal officials also agreed to collaborate with each other in enticing cruise ships to visit the islands.

The 17th General Assembly of the AMIM also adopted the following resolutions to:

• Express congratulations to Pacific Flier and Freedom Air as they expand their operations throughout the Mariana islands;

• Request the Guam Department of Agriculture to reexamine and reform the quarantine rules and regulations regarding the  inter-island exchange of livestock;

• Request the Joint Guam Program Office to continue to explore the possibilities of using the CNMI as part of the regional military buildup and transfer of the U.S. Marine Corps from Okinawa, Japan;

• Request and support the establishment of the Marianas Golf Tour by the Guam Visitors Bureau and the Marianas Visitors Bureau; and,

• Support the promotion of the Chamorro culture through language, art and dance throughout the Marinas.

Flores said  AMIM agreed to support all organizations that enhance Chamorro culture, dance, language and chants as well as cultural arts through weaving and carving.

All resolutions were certified by the AMIM president, Rota Mayor Melchor A. Mendiola, and secretary, Chalan Pago-Ordot Mayor Jessy Gogue of Guam.
