VETERANS were honored by the local community at a ceremonial wreath-laying ceremony on Monday, Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at American Memorial Park.
Organized by the Office of Veterans Affairs, the event was marked by an invocation by Fr. Rey Rosal and a 21-gun salute.
The Saipan Pacific Winds Concert Band provided ensemble music while Gus Kaipat sang the CNMI and national anthems.
The Saipan Southern High School Manta Ray Battalion posted the colors.
In his keynote address, Col. Rafael Vargas of Joint Region Marianas spoke about the sacrifices that veterans make and what makes the people of the Marianas and their veterans remarkable.
“I have the pleasure of learning so much about your culture and all of your islands,” he said. “The CNMI is like nowhere else in the world, and I have great respect for the pride, the resourcefulness, and the resilience of its people. Our American history is full of brave men and women who chose to stand up and answer our nation’s call to serve. They raised their hand and swore to serve a purpose higher than themselves. To serve the American values of freedom, liberty, and justice for all. In this part of the world where our history is deeply intertwined, this day takes on a special significance. For generations, the people of the CNMI have been integral to the defense of our nation. From veterans of World War II to the ongoing service members that wear the uniform today, we honor our veterans everywhere and thank them for their service and sacrifices they have made to safeguard our freedoms.”
Also on hand was Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, who said that “more can and must be done” for veterans.
“We must continue to advocate for laws and resources that meet the needs of our veterans and families in the Pacific,” he said. “Let us envision a future of a community-based outreach clinic offering dedicated medical care, counseling and essential services here in our islands for our veterans. Regardless of the numbers of veterans in our community, we must ensure that no one who has served our country stands without the support that they have earned.”
