“The event was visualized by the youth under Education Commissioner Rita Sablan’s vision,” said Dandan Elementary School principal Jonas Barcinas, one of the youth advisors.
Barcinas said the event will be led by Francine Babauta, Board of Education student representative.
Youth leaders from Rota, Tinian and Saipan have been planning this and other community events to allow more their peers to share their concerns with the community, he said.
“They are our future leaders and if want them to be competitive in the 21st century then we need to start now,” Barcinas said.
The event is also a fundraiser and the proceeds will be used for the youth events on May 12-17, as well as the Youth Summit on May 25.
Barcinas said he and the other youth advisors — Alfred Ada, Eric San Nicolas, Pete Lea’u, Jackie Quitugua and Steve Smith — have met to plan for these events of which the PSS Rock Event is one of the biggest.
Other events for the youth include the Marianas March Against Cancer on May 22 and the Support our Troops program which encourages all students and schools to wear and display yellow ribbons to show support for the nation’s armed forces.
The Public School System Youth Advisory Panel will advise PSS on issues that affect students in the school community.
The panel will serve as the students’ communication link to the government, businesses and the entire community on a variety of subjects.
It will identity and advocate for the needs of youth in the school community, and carry out events and activities that are important to students.
For the PSS Rock Event, Barcinas said tickets cost $35 each and the program will start at 6 p.m. on Friday.
