“It is a part of the typhoon recovery fund,” she said, adding that NMTI will use it to renovate the Koblerville gym and use it as a classroom.
“It is a federal grant for a classroom, so we have to look for another source of funding for a dormitory,” McPhetres said.
The NMTI is currently conducting classes in Lower Base.
“Every time it rains, the water comes in and also leaks. At times, students have to use umbrellas in order not to get wet while in the classroom,” McPhetres said.
Like many homes and buildings on island, the NMTI facility in Lower Base was also affected by Super Typhoon Yutu in October 2018.
“It really affected our facility, and [it] is not fit for an educational institution,” she said, adding that NMTI has to relocate.
Besides the $2 million from HUD, NMTI has also applied for a $10 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Authority.
