No action against AG disappoints Kilili

Sablan told reporters  that the OSC found evidence  indicating that Buckingham broke the law but did not take action.

Sablan noted that using public resources for political purposes violates federal law and commonwealth law as well.

“We should not expect the federal government to tell us what to do. This is our government that is threatened by public corruption. It is our responsibility to protect our own self-government,” Sablan added.

But in an email, Buckingham said  the record is clear that  he never endorsed a candidate and never directed anyone to vote for a candidate, the AG said.

“Thanksgiving and the Holiday season is one of reflection, appreciation and forgiveness. In this spirit, I hope the New Year brings Congressman Sablan peace and contentment,” he added.

Buckingham also provided Variety a copy of his remarks during the gathering at the governors’ residence two years ago. “I never endorsed any candidate, including Joe Camacho,” the AG said.

Sablan said it is a matter of very serious concern if the AG — the CNMI’s top law enforcement officer — appears to have broken the law.

Sablan said he  disagrees with the  OSC’s decision not to pursue the case.

“But then, again, we cannot expect the federal government to care as much about our commonwealth government as we do,” Sablan said, adding that he is glad the CNMI Senate and the NMI Bar Association are also looking into the controversy.
