No more Brownfields controversies please

Pankaj Arora, EPA’s Brownfields program manager, was scheduled to present a check for $750,000  to the Department of Public Lands yesterday.

$350,000 will be used for the assessment of the proposed location of a new landfill on Tinian, while  $400,000 is for community-wide site assessments on Saipan.

Citing their experience with the Marpi Brownfields project, which remains controversial, Arora said there are areas for improvement this time.

Arora said  the CNMI has to seek  public participation to avoid confusion among members of the community.

He also encouraged smooth communications between regulatory bodies and permitting agencies.

There is, however, no reason for the EPA to stop the ongoing Brownfields project in Marpi., he said.
