THE Public School System has no more funds to finance the construction of the Alamagan and Anatahan school projects in the Northern Islands, according to Board of Education Chairman Herman T. Guerrero.
The Alamagan school project is estimated to cost between $640,000 to $850,000. Northern Island leaders are hoping that some excess funds could be tapped to finance the projects.
However, Guerrero said this is not possible at this time because PSS could barely sustain the needs of all public schools on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
“At this time, there is no additional funding that can be identified from our PSS CIP account,” Guerrero told Northern Islands Mayor Valentin I. Taisakan.
“Most of our projects are in their final closing stages and at best, most projects require additional funds in order to complete the final punch list of the project or complete an essential element such as a school bell for the affected school,” he added.
There is hope though that the projects may be financed in the future through the help of the CNMI’s elected leaders.
“With your assistance, the State Board of Education and PSS can continue to bring this need to our executive and legislative branches for their assistance through direct appropriations,” Guerrero said.
