October is Humanities Month

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial on Friday urged the community to participate in different programs and activities in observance of the Humanities Month celebration.

“Humanities enhance and enrich the lives of all people. It allows us to examine our past and present experiences in light of values and beliefs that we have traditionally relied upon for guidance and direction, and it preserves a wealth of knowledge that assists us to bring meaning to our lives and to understand an increasingly complex world in which we live,” the governor’s proclamation stated.

The NMI Humanities Council is a private, non-profit corporation who works hand in hand with the office of the governor to recognize outstanding individual contributions in the humanities, as well as contributions made by donors, partners and former members of the council’s board of directors.

Among the current programs of the Humanities council are the Chamorro Language Project, a three-year collaborative project to study and help preserve the Chamorro language; the 2008 Governor’s Humanities Awards; Junior High Mock Trial Program; and other activities.

The winners of the 2008 Governor’s Humanities Awards will be announced in October. The awardees will come from nominated individuals, groups, institutions and organizations who have made significant contributions to the humanities in different categories.

This covers research and publication in the humanities, preservation of CNMI history, preservation of traditional cultural practices, outstanding humanities teacher, and lifetime achievement in the humanities.
