Official says feds want to help NMI economy without sacrificing national security

Asked about the eventual fate of the islands’ nonresident workers, who comprise the bulk of the private sector’s workforce, David Gulick said:  “Rest assured that probably there’s something to be done. What that is, I don’t know.”

The umbrella permits issued by the CNMI government to nonresidents will expire in Nov. 2011.

Gulick, the USCIS regional director in Honolulu, Hawaii, said the discretionary parole privileges that his agency extends to nonresidents in the CNMI are indications that the federal government is sensitive about theirs and their employers’ needs.

“Our message to the public is try to read the information we provided. If you have questions, talk to us,” said Gulick.

He reiterated his invitation to CNMI investors and employers to visit the USCIS office on Saipan today or tomorrow.

He said he will personally try to answer their questions.

After Dec. 23, appointments with the USCIS can be made via Infopass (http://infopass.uscis.gov).
