(Opioid Proceeds Council, Saipan) — In response to the nationwide opioid crisis and as a part of a collective legal effort, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands enacted Public Law 23-19 to officially establish the Opioid Proceeds Council.
The OPC serves as the designated authority to manage, distribute, and oversee the use of the opioid settlement funds that the CNMI receives for the abatement and remediation of opioid and substance use disorders in the Commonwealth. The Council’s role is to ensure that the opioid funds received are allocated and utilized to support efforts that reduce the harm caused by opioids.
The Council consists of the CNMI attorney general, the governor or his designee, and the CHCC’s CEO or her designee.
“With the establishment of the OPC, we are taking an important step in protecting future generations and rebuilding our community, through prevention, treatment and recovery support,” the Council stated.
In the upcoming months, the OPC will issue a notice of funding opportunity with specific guidelines that prioritizes funding evidence-based interventions, prevention strategies and recovery support services. The Council encourages eligible organizations to apply for funding once the notice of funding is published.
The Council is committed to ensuring that the opioid settlement funds are directed toward meaningful, community-centered solutions that help address addiction, promote recovery, and save lives.
