Ornes is NMI’s teacher of the year

The awards were given out during the culminating event  at the Saipan World Resort.

It started at 5 p.m. with a presentation of colors by Marianas High School cadets.

Students then sang songs and recited poetry.

Named teacher of the year was Maria Ornes of MHS.

The other winners were Pupil Transportation of the Year: Fonzie Yoshida (Central Office), Administrative Staff of the Year:  Ruby Hocog (Dandan Elementary School), Trade and Maintenance Staff of the Year: Ariel Narvaez (Gregorio T. Camacho), Related Service Provider of the Year: Cherry Johnson (Special Education Program), Counselor of the Year: Rebecca B. Flores (William S. Reyes), Teacher Aide of the Year: Barbina Solberg (Oleai Elementary School), Instructor of the Year: Joaquin Kiyoshi (Saipan Southern High School), Vice Principal of the Year: Betty Miller (San Vicente), and Principal of the Year: Ignacia Demapan (Kagman Elementary School).

Ornes was not present during the awarding ceremonies but MHS principal Karen Borja accepted the award on her behalf.

Commissioner of Education Rita A. Sablan, in her remarks, thanked the school officials and the students’ parents “for coming together to discuss the accomplishments of the schools and their teachers.”
