Detective Kevin R. Maratita said police were dispatched to a reported theft case at the Grand Market on Middle Road.
Preliminary investigation showed that the suspect entered the establishment and put a loaf of bread on the counter along with a half case of beer, while still carrying a case of beer on his left arm.
The suspect then ran out of the store with the case of beer without paying for the item, Maratita said.
On Oct. 3, 2011, as police checked the surveillance footage of Grand Market, Detective Maratita identified Porras, a Dandan resident, as the suspect.
Maratita also identified the getaway vehicle as a two-toned Toyota Hilux pick-up truck silver/black in color.
Porras dove into the bed of the truck after running from the store entrance, Maratita said.
Porras, a Dandan resident, was identified through footage of a surveillance camera. The case agent also knew Porras as a dart player with the Saipan Electronic Dart league.
Superior Court Judge David A. Wiseman allowed Porras to post $100, or 10 percent of the bail order, and the $900 remainder in unsecured bond.
Porras was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after his initial appearance and bail hearing yesterday morning. He is being held on the charge of theft.
Court records showed Porras and Gustavo Ybanez were respondents to a small claim case in 2003, amounting to $173.70. The status of that case was not immediately known.
