OSHA holds training to enhance worker competence

The two-day training that started on Tuesday was attended by more than a hundred representatives from different companies and government agencies.

Its purpose was to give participants basic knowledge about OSHA requirements and federal standards.

Held at the Army Reserve Center, the training session, which OSHA conducted for the first time, focused on work places where there are  high rates of injuries.

The training aimed to enhance the participants’ general knowledge and skills in recognizing work hazards, said Van A. Howell, safety and health manager of the U.S. Department of Labor’s OSHA.

After the presentation, the participants asked questions about OSHA requirements.

Ray Guerrero, manager of CNMI-OSHA’s on-site consultation services, said there are programs that many workers and employers are still not aware of.

The training, he said, gave them the chance to avail of these local and federal programs.

“We provided them the information on how to get access to the programs and assistance from OSHA,” Guerrero said.

The training discussed employee/employer rights, communications, electrical and blood-borne hazards, fall protection, scuffling and ladder safety, traffic control, drenching and excavation.

Guerrero said they hope to hold this training every year.
