‘Outside’ panel will assess new colleges

TO uphold its integrity, the State Board of Regents will get an “outside panel” to conduct assessments of college licensure applications.

The board, which is also the governing body of Northern Marianas College, wants to assure the public, particularly the applicants for a college license, of its impartiality.

“We don’t want to involve NMC here to avoid suspicion of partiality. The board assures everyone of a fair process,” Vince Merfalen, the board special assistant, said.

The board is considering the application of Joy Pacific International University, a Korean academic organization that aims to set up a post-secondary institution on Saipan.

Joy Pacific filed its application in early January this year.

“Its application will be reviewed by an outside committee,” Merfalen said.

Joy Pacific aims to offer bachelor, master and doctorate programs in various fields.

The board is also reviewing the application of Eucon International College whose nine-month provisional license was revoked in March.

The board will likewise assess the application of another local institution, International Business and Professional College.
