Over 100 educators complete PSS Ed Tech program

THE Public School System’s Ed Tech Data & Innovation Showcase Program awarded certificates of completion on Saturday to more than 100 educators from both public and private schools.

The program is federally funded and is managed by the PSS Federal Programs Office.

This year’s participants, known as Cohort 13, were divided into four teams. Ninety of them come from public schools. On Saturday, their instructors joined them for a graduation ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Crowne Plaza’s Hibiscus Hall.

Board of Education member Andrew Orsini and Education Commissioner Dr. Lawrence F. Camacho delivered congratulatory remarks.

In her remarks, PSS Instructional Technology & Distance Education Director Dr. Lorraine Catienza shared data regarding the program.

Participants learned about the Ed Tech Program of Study, Google Apps for Education, digital citizenship in schools, student tech products, instructional design with technology, and advanced computer applications.

“The pre- and post-assessment data for all courses clearly shows that participants have made great progress in mastering digital tools and gaining confidence in their ability to integrate technology into their work. These results show that when technology is in the hands of great people, whether in the classroom, in leadership, or supporting students behind the scenes, it becomes a powerful force for transformation,” Catienza said.

Orsini commended the participants for embracing the program and striving to advance themselves. He emphasized its importance, quoting Catienza: “Technology does not make great educators; it is the educators who make technology.”

Reflecting on his own experience as a participant years ago, Orsini said he learned a great deal.

“Having gone through the EdTech program myself, I can see how it helps teachers use technology in ways that make learning more engaging for students,” he added.  Obtaining this particular knowledge, he said, is very commendable, so “let’s give each other a big round of applause.”

For his part, Commissioner Camacho said he was impressed by the new and innovative technologies and applications participants learned about throughout the program.

He emphasized the program’s importance, saying, “Today, we are challenged by the complexities of technology. With technological advancements happening so rapidly, we educators need to quickly educate ourselves as well to keep pace, and this program allows for that alignment.”

“As technology advances in education, this program provides educators with the tools and training to harness these innovations, ensuring they can better support and enhance student learning,” Camacho said.
