Over 100 kids join DYS summer camp activities

Volunteer Dorothy Jebehn said the summer camp started on Aug. 1 and will end on Friday.

“The summer camp has been conducted each year for several years. This summer camp is based mostly on hands-on and outdoor activities,” Jebehn said.

Jebehn, who has been a volunteer for the past two years, said  she enjoys being with  children as they perform various activities like coconut weaving, painting and bead making.

The children also learn about musical instruments, dancing, storytelling and many other activities.

Moreover, they learn about the fish and wildlife on Saipan.

Jebehn said the instructors are mostly DYS staffers including Kolfred Mettao who taught the children coconut weaving, and Lucy and Gina Yaroitema who taught dancing.

Volunteering with Jebehn for the summer camp are Ann Marie Moses, Rosie K. Bautista, LillyJean Bautista, Juana Moses, Jon Cenir, Marc Trinidad, Lawrence Deleon Guerrero, Victor Cabrera, and Jennifer Dela Cruz.

“The kids are really enjoying the activities with the volunteers, [Workforce Investment Agency] workers, instructors, and DYS staffers who are there to help out and make sure they are having fun in a safe way,” Jebehn said.
