Palacios gives up chairmanship

In a letter to Speaker Eli D. Cabrera yesterday, Palacios, who is out on bail, said his resignation was effective immediately “to give way to others who can better provide the time dealing with issues surrounding education on our island.”

Cabrera, R-Saipan, accepted Palacios’ resignation and said in an interview that he has yet to decide on a replacement, but added that there are other members  fit to chair the education panel.

Palacios, Covenant-Saipan, told Cabrera that “it is indeed an honor and privilege to have served under this committee and that should my assistance is needed that I am ready to assist in any way I can do.”

The Precinct 2 representative also assured the speaker that “I will continue to support the House leadership in advocating and setting forth plan that will aid our struggling CNMI economy and importantly, our people.”

He added, “I strongly believe that I must step down as chairman so you can appoint someone else who can dedicate and devote his or her time in addressing matters pertaining to education in the CNMI.”

House Floor Leader George N. Camacho, Ind.-Saipan, said he is glad that Palacios decided to resign.

It just shows that Palacios wants his committee to move forward, Camacho added.

There are a lot of bills pending in the committee, he said.
