Palau hosts Presidents Summit

KOROR (Palau Horizon) — Palau will hold this year’s President Summit among the leaders of the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau and the Marshall Islands from June 8 to 11.

The three presidents will discuss issues affecting their countries and other areas of cooperation important to the three nations.

President Tommy Remengesau, in a letter to FSM President Leo Falcam and Marshalls President Kessai Note, said the summit would discuss pressing issues and future actions that would be taken.

These include the bilateral update on FSM’s Compact renegotiation and Palau’s bid to become a member of the National Carriers Association.

The presidents will also discuss the extradition law and other banking measures recently passed by Palau.

In addition, the three countries are jointly requesting a grant from Japan for the installation of modern telecommunications technology.

Palau also expressed interest in hearing the results of FSM and Marshalls’ negotiations and efforts regarding a trans-Pacific fiber optic branch.

The three countries will discuss the quarantine standardization since Palau has received a grant that will permit it to begin the process of upgrading its customs and quarantine capacities that could lead to quarantine improvements.
