Palau issues measles alert

KOROR (Palau Horizon) — The Bureau of Public Health has asked the public to take precaution following an advisory from Guam about a measles outbreak.

Dr. Caleb Otto urged parents to ensure that their children have been immunized.

Those who still have not received anti-measles vaccination should immediately be brought to doctors for appropriate action, he said.

Otto said a message alert sent to the Ministry from Guam health authorities noted that between April 13 and 19, eight suspected measles cases were reported to the Bureau of Communicable Disease Control.

According to the message alert, the children involved are between nine months to three years old.

Otto said that due to the proximity of Guam and the traffic of individuals coming into Palau from the island, precautionary measures should be taken to prevent an outbreak of the disease here.

Otto said that there is a high vaccination rate in Palau. However, he said precautionary measures should be taken by parents whose children were not born in the country.
