Papa-san leads 16th Annual Mahi-Mahi Derby

PAPA-SAN has taken the title of the 16th Annual Mahi-Mahi Derby after reeling in an 18.3-pound Mahi-Mahi last Saturday before time ran out at the Smiling Cove Marina.

It was rough waters this time around as it looked like the pandemic has spread underwater leaving competitors with barely any catch. At around 4:00 p.m., only 12 boats have registered bringing in a handful of Wahoos and barely any of the required catch to take the throne.

Yellow Snow returned to shore hoping to make the board with an 11lbs Mahi-Mahi but Reysa shadowed after with an even heavier catch weighing in at 15.2lbs to take the lead. However, during the last 30 minutes in crunch time, Papa-san stole the show hauling in an 18.3lbs Mahi-Mahi to claim this year’s title.

J & MJ sits at 2nd place falling a few pounds short at 16.2lbs followed by boat San Juan at 3rd place weighing at 15.2lbs. This year, SFA added 4th and 5th places with the former filled by Borrow Fan at 12.7lbs and Sweet Candy taking the latter at 12.6lbs.

It was a tough competition for all but for Chris Pangelinan of boat Borrow Fan, his focus was to catch Mahi-Mahis but filled his buckets with mostly Wahoos which came to a benefit as he led the side bet of heaviest Wahoo weighing at 26.7. “We went out there looking for Mahi-Mahis but ended up with buckets of Wahoos instead.” said Pangelinan. Either way, he and Borrow Fan went home with 4th place for the Mahi-Mahi section and 1st place for the Wahoos.

Other contenders in the Mahi-Mahi section was 10-7 with 11.6lbs.

Making the board for Wahoos were San Juan with 20lbs, Elliot Mako Systems with 19.5lbs, Team Triple J with 16.1lbs, Ocean Fever with 14.7lbs, Sean Celia with 13.5lbs, Fountain with 11.6lbs, and Salty Bandits with 8.5lbs.
