Parents say NMC should retain good instructors

THE administration of Northern Marianas College should try its best to settle its problems with its staff and faculty so it can retain excellent instructors, Dan Santos, a parent of a student, said.

“If the NMC administration would keep on terminating good people, who would be left behind?” he asked.

Recently terminated without an explanation was long-time social science and history instructor Samuel McPhetres, perhaps the most well-known member of the NMC faculty.

Santos believes that good instructors

are the main reason why NMC is able to provide quality education to its students.

George Sablan, another parent of a student, said NMC should consider the contributions of the instructors in ensuring academic excellence.

“There are many instructors who could replace those who were given a ‘graceful exit’ but you can only count with your five fingers the number of experienced and good teachers,” he added.

Other NMC parents interviewed by this reporter refused to be identified but expressed their dismay

over what is happening on campus.

“Only a few instructors are like Samuel McPhetres who contributes his time and efforts not only to the students but also to the community,” one of them said.

He said the college must listen to the negative feedback it receives from students and employees to improve NMC management.

Santos agreed.

“The management should know how to accept criticism and use it for their benefit and not to use it against its employees,” he said.
