Park prepares for 30th birthday

“Preparations are underway for American Memorial Park’s celebration of its 30th anniversary, and we are asking one and all to come and participate in the programs we have prepared,” Kautzman told the Variety in a telephone interview yesterday.

“We are finalizing the draft for the events we have in store for the whole day. This will be a perfect time for families to get together,” Kautzman said.

She said American Memorial Park will turn 30 on Aug. 18 but they have moved the celebration on the 23rd to accommodate everybody.

Kautzman said the event will be opened with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Court of Honor at around 10 a.m.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., different games are planned for children and adults to enjoy.

As a treat to all the participants who will be at the park, Kautzman said they will be giving out free cupcakes and punch.

Kautzman said among the games children will find enjoyable and challenging are the history scavenger hunt where they will have to search for objects and find answers through clues, and a search for “pretend” brown tree snakes which will be hidden all over the park.

The children will be searching for rubber snakes — not real ones.

Expected to participate in the event are Park Superintendent Sarah Creachbaum, as well as other staff from the federal park on Guam.

“A big 30th birthday bash for the community is our way of saying thanks for all the support we have received from the community throughout our 30 years of existence and operation here,” Kautzman said.
